Finding the Right Fit: One Family’s Journey with Dogwood Virtual School
For Heather, a Rocky Mount mom of three, the search for a better schooling option began out of frustration. Each of her children was struggling in the traditional classroom, and communication with teachers felt limited.
“I just didn’t feel like my kids were getting what they needed in the classroom,” Heather explained. “It’s not necessarily the teachers’ fault – there are so many rules and so many kids in one classroom. But I wanted – and needed – something different.”
When Heather saw an ad for virtual school on Facebook, she asked her kids if they’d be open to trying something new. To her relief, they said yes.
“I knew I wanted to do some type of homeschooling, but I didn’t feel like I had the strength to do it all on my own – getting the curriculum, planning everything, keeping up with it,” she said. “Dogwood Virtual School felt like the perfect bridge.”
Success at Home
The family joined Dogwood Virtual School (DVS) last year, and the difference was immediate.
Heather describes the first year as a learning curve but ultimately a turning point: “Their grades were absolutely better. Cassidy ended up getting AB honor roll for the first time ever.”
For Cassidy, who has sometimes struggled with reading and spelling, the personalized support at DVS made a big difference. “She needs extra time,” Heather shared, “and they are amazing with her. They talked with her, they involved her in every meeting, and they gave her options, like being able to retake quizzes. Instead of saying, ‘Nope, that’s your final grade,’ they gave her chances to succeed.”
Cassidy agreed that the support made school more comfortable. “I liked being at home and not feeling pressured,” she said quietly.
Balancing School and Passions
A dedicated all-star cheerleader and dancer, Cassidy spends multiple nights each week at practices and competitions.
“She’s such an introvert in everyday life, but when she’s on the mat, she transforms,” Heather said with pride. “At competitions, the judges always notice her. The owner of the cheer company even told her, ‘My eyes go straight to you.’ She’s sassy and confident out there. It’s a totally different side of her.”
Cassidy, who just celebrated her 11th birthday, is also expanding her love of dance. This year, she’s adding more classes, from hip-hop to ballet and lyrical.
“I’m excited to do more classes and meet new instructors,” Cassidy said. “I also like competing. It’s fun to show what we’ve practiced.”
The Path Forward
As the family heads into their second year with DVS, Heather feels confident in the decision.
“I love the communication with the teachers. They check in, let me know if my kids are missing something, and really partner with me,” she said. “I tell everybody about DVS. I tell people all the time, it’s just been such a great experience.”
For Cassidy, the nerves about spelling and reading are still there, but with her teachers’ help and encouragement, she’s moving forward with confidence.
And when she’s not studying? You’ll find Cassidy on the cheer mat – confident, sassy and showing the world a whole different side of herself.
