Meet Dr. GeRita Connor: DVS’s New Executive Director

Dogwood Virtual School (DVS) is excited to welcome Dr. GeRita Connor as our new Executive Director. She brings a wealth of experience in community building and virtual school leadership, and we’re excited to have her on board to begin our second year!

A Lifelong Passion for Education

Dr. Connor’s love for teaching began early – when she was 16, she earned her early childhood credentials at the local community college and began working in preschools.

“From then on, I knew I would be a teacher,” she said.

From Leadership to Innovation

Dr. Connor began her journey in leadership at a high-needs elementary school facing state takeover. Within three years, she helped lead the school from one of the lowest-performing schools in the state to the highest-performing in its district.

“That was my first real experience with school transformation,” she shared. “It just happened to also be my very first leadership role.”

That success sparked a passion for school turnaround work that has continued throughout her career. She went on to lead in one of North Carolina’s first virtual schools, improving student outcomes and high school graduation rates.

Building Schools from the Ground Up

Dr. Connor’s leadership experience extends even further. She helped open a new virtual school in South Carolina, guiding it through early challenges and leading the school off the state’s watch list within three years.

“It seems like a lot of movement, but every step was natural and organic,” Connor explained. “I knew the growth and learning I would gain from these experiences would only make me a stronger leader.”

Why DVS?

After time consulting with school systems and training assistant principals, Connor realized she missed being part of a school community. That desire brought her back to school leadership – and ultimately to DVS.

“I enjoyed the work I was doing, but I wasn’t connected to a school community,” she said. “I couldn’t see that immediate impact on students. That’s why I wanted to return.”

Looking Ahead

With her track record of transforming schools and her heart for students, staff, and families, Dr. Connor is ready to help DVS continue building momentum.

In the coming year, she’ll prioritize building a strong community and leading with accountability – all propelled by data as the driving force behind each step.

“There are so many talented people here, hardworking educators and students ready to thrive,” she shared. “I want to make sure that shines through as we move forward together.”
